Jas Nagra and Tyler Page have qualified as members on the Region’s 5 Pin Bowling Team and Austin Barber has qualified as a member of the Langley Basketball team for the Special Olympics BC Summer Games this summer. CONGRATULATIONS!

The Specials Olympics BC – Provincial Summer Games takes place July 11-14 in Langley!

Japan Spring Break Trip

During spring break, 12 LSS students fulfilled one of their dreams by visiting Japan. The trip was packed with amazing sites and experiences, such as the electronics and anime capital Akihabara (Tokyo) and the fashion capital Shibuya (Tokyo), a traditional bath at a hot spring hotel, amazing views of Mt. Fuji, the black castle at Matsumoto, and cherry blossoms at the wonderful temples and shrines in Kyoto. The two frequent comments by participants was that they needed more time to see more and to do more shopping, and that they would come back to Japan again to stay longer. Our visit was very much like the famous cherry blossoms in Japan, beautiful but not here long enough. The trip was led by Japanese teachers Mr. Richard Janzen and Mrs. Denise Turner, along with Mrs. Kim Bailey, the mother of two participants. If you are interested in joining the next trip to Japan, it will probably be in the spring of 2015 or 2016…time to start saving!!

LSS Track Athlete Poised to be Best in BC High School History!

Georgia Ellenwood, grade 12 student has won a full ride scholarship to Wisconsin next year. Georgia has had an incredible high school career in track and field, winning the Provincial senior girls Heptathlon in her grade 9 year. The province newspaper says, “ the girl poised to become perhaps the most successful multi-event track and field competitor in B.C. high school history”

LSS Grad from 2012 – Top Goalie in Canada

Congratulations to LSS 2012 Grad Sienna Cooke!

Sienna Cooke graduated in 2012 from LSS. Sienna chose to come to LSS even though she lived in Surrey because of the opportunity to develop her skills in our hockey academy. She never looked back! Sienna accepted a scholarship to St. Mary’s in Halifax so she could play for the women’s hockey team there. Sienna is a very talented goalie and has helped the Huskies make an incredible comeback this year. Here is an excerpt from the media:

His top recruit has been in goal. Sienna Cooke, a first-year netminder from Surrey, B.C., led the conference in minutes played (1,160) — the only AUS goalie to top 1,000 minutes — tied for second in wins (10), finished third in save percentage (.934) and posted a stellar goals against average of 1.86. “We’ve relied on strong goaltending this season and Cookie has been unbelievable,” Larade said. “If she’s not a candidate for CIS rookie of the year, then I’m not sure what’s going on. She loves the game and it’s contagious. The girls feed off it.”

In a text to her dad on Feb 22, Sienna reported that she was just named CIS – AUS Conference Rookie of the Year.

Sienna’s father, Derek Cooke, Superintendent of Langley RCMP told us: “No doubt in my mind this wouldn’t have happened were it not for her attendance at the LSS Hockey Academy.”

Stand Up…Don’t Stand By Student Anti-Bullying Forum

On February 14, students at LSS banded together as “Shameless Idealists” in an effort to work together on skills to stand up to bullying. A wonderful panel of community members joined the students to share their own experiences, advice and strategies. The student-organized event was a huge success, demonstrating how powerful a young person’s voice can be. Thanks to all of the students who organized the event. Thank you to the participants for taking a leap of faith.
